SAFECO FIELD - After being added to the Seattle Mariners roster on Thursday, Cole Gillespie will make his debut with the team against the Texas Rangers Friday night.

Gillespie's contract was selected by the Mariners and he was added to the team's 40-man roster. Nick Franklin was sent down to Triple-A Tacoma and pitcher Erasmo Ramirez was optioned to Single-A High Desert. The team also called-up reliever Lucas Luetge Friday to fill out their roster.

Gillespie had a strong start to the season for the Rainiers after having a solid spring training as well. Gillespie was batting .362 (21x58) with five doubles, a triple, five home runs, 14 RBI and a 1.197 OPS in 16 games with Tacoma.

"The only thing I could do is go down there and continue to put up some numbers and open some eyes and try to force their hand if I could," Gillespie said. "I was fortunate enough to go down there and swing a hot bat and play some good defense and I’m lucky enough to to be up here this early.”

He will start in left field for Seattle and bat eighth in the lineup against Texas. Manager Lloyd McClendon said the lineup to be more right-handed against the left-handed Robbie Ross, who starts tonight for the Rangers. It's also why Willie Bloomquist is in the lineup at shortstop in place of Brad Miller.

Gillespie has appeared in 78 career Major League games with the Arizona Diamondbacks (2010-2011), San Francisco Giants (2013) and Chicago Cubs (2013).

James Paxton was able to play catch earlier on Friday and had no issues. McClendon said he threw from about 45 feet today and probably throw from 60 feet the next time he throws.
