PEORIA, Ariz. – Minor league infielder Tyler Smith hit a game-tying two-run double in the bottom of the 9th inning and Nate Tenbrink delivered a walk-off single to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies Friday night in Cactus League exhibition play at Peoria Stadium.
The Mariners trailed 2-0 and were limited to 4 hits in the first innings before storming back for their 18th Cactus League victory. John Buck led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a fielding error by Rockies shortstop Josh Rutledge. Smith, who was the Mariners 8th round pick out of Oregon State last June, lined a double down the left field line to score pinch-runner John Hicks and Endy Chavez. After an intentional walk to Stefen Romero, Tenbrink lined a one-out single into right field for the game-winner.
Smith, who was the 2013 Appalachian League MVP for the Pulaski Mariners, is batting .571 (8x14) with 9 runs scored, one double, one triple, one home run and 6 RBI in 13 Cactus League games. Center fielder Abraham Almonte (1x2), second baseman Robinson Cano (1x3, 2B), third baseman Kyle Seager (1x3) and designated hitter Logan Morrison (1x3) also recorded hits.
Starting pitcher Roenis Elias made his final Cactus League start in preparation for his Major League debut next Thursday vs. the A’s in Oakland. The left-hander allowed a pair of runs, striking out 5 and walking 2 in 5.0 innings. Relief pitchers Yoervis Medina (2.0 IP, 3 K), Fernando Rodney (1.0 IP, H, BB) and Tom Wilhelmsen (1.0 IP, BB) held the Rockies scoreless the rest of the way.
The Rockies jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the 3rd inning. After a leadoff triple by pitcher Tyler Chatwood, a two-out double by shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and single by left fielder Carlos Gonzalez put the Rockies up 2-0. Chatwood left the game for a pinch-runner with a strained left hamstring and cramping.
The Mariners (18-11-3) close out Cactus League play tomorrow with a 12:10 pm game vs. the Rockies at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale. RH Chris Young will make his first start in a Mariners uniform, after signing as a free agent Thursday. The Rockies will start left-hander Franklin Morales (3-1, 2.21).
