SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks played to a 3-3 tie in Cactus League action Monday night in front of a sold-out crowd of 11,071 at Salt River Fields.
The Mariners were defeated by the Royals 8-2 earlier in the day in the afternoon portion of the day-night, split-squad doubleheader, and are 10-4-1 in Cactus League play.
Starting pitcher James Paxton allowed one run in 4.0 innings, scattering 5 hits while striking out 2 batters. In three spring starts, the left-hander has allowed only one run (1.00 ERA) and has yet to walk a batter in 9.0 innings. Relief pitcher Dominic Leone threw 2.0 perfect innings with 2 strikeouts to keep the game tied in the 8th and 9th innings.
Seattle jumped out to the early lead with a pair of runs in the 2nd inning. Michael Saunders singled and moved to third base on a ground-rule double by Mike Zunino. Endy Chavez drove in the first run on a fielder’s choice and Carlos Triunfel plated a run on a sacrifice fly.
Brad Miller tripled to lead off the 5th inning and scored on a groundout by Stefen Romero for the third run of the game. Arizona scored a run in the 4th off Paxton and tied the game at 3-3 with a pair of runs off relief pitcher James Gillheeney in the 5th inning.
Miller (2x4, R, 3B) and Romero (2x4, 2B, RBI) each recorded multi-hit games for the Mariners. After starting the spring 0-for-16, Romero has caught fire to go 6-for-11 (.545) with 2 doubles, 2 triples, one home run and 3 RBI. Miller is batting .304 (7x23) with a triple, 2 home runs and 5 RBI in 8 Cactus League games.
The Mariners (10-4-1) return to Cactus League action tomorrow with a road game at the Los Angeles Angels at Tempe Diablo Stadium (1:10 pm). RH Scott Baker (1-0, 1.80) will make his third spring start against Angels LH C.J. Wilson. The game will be televised live on the MLB Network in the Pacific Northwest (check your local listings).
