SAFECO FIELD - The Seattle Mariners have placed left-handed pitcher James Paxton on the 15-day disabled list with a left latissimus dorsi strain.

The team has recalled left-handed pitcher Lucas Luetge from Triple-A Tacoma.

Paxton left Tuesday night's game against the Los Angeles Angels in the sixth inning. He had an MRI early Wednesday afternoon and the results confirmed the strain. Paxton said he didn't believe it was anything more serious than what they anticipated.

Paxton said they are still assessing the course of action they will take with the injury and for now he's just expected to rest.

Manager Lloyd McClendon said pre-game that if Paxton couldn't make the start, Chris Young would be expected to take his spot in the rotation. Young did not start in Oakland after the game he was scheduled to pitch was postponed.

The Mariners may also have to bring up another starter from the minors at some point as well. Blake Beavan likely would be the first candidate if needed.

Hisashi Iwakuma threw 34 pitches off a mound on Wednesday as he works his way back from a torn tendon in his right middle finger.

Iwakuma said everything went well and he feels he's progressing toward a return, though it's likely still a few weeks away.
